Neurological Physiotherapy
Neurological physiotherapy specialises in the treatment of people with neurological symptoms following damage to the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves.
To help identify your specific individual needs, our neurological physiotherapists will assess movement, coordination, sensation, balance and posture to formulate a bespoke treatment plan.
Treatment focuses on regaining or improving function in everyday activities and may include:
- Strengthening and stretching exercises
- Balance training and postural re-education
- Functional task practice
- Gait re-education
- Trial of different walking/mobility aids
- Application of hands-on specialist techniques
- Education on condition and/or symptom management
- Application and use of neurotechnology
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy (OT) aims to support individuals to regain the ability to do the things they need, want, or are expected to do in their daily lives.
Our experienced OTs work closely with clients to assess their current abilities and develop individual rehabilitation programmes focussed on each individual’s specific goals.
Our OTs can visit your home to assess how accessible it is and provide recommendations about equipment or adaptations to optimise your independence.
Our OTs can also assess and practise a variety of skills including washing, dressing and kitchen activities to increase your independence and confidence. They can also liaise with external companies to arrange equipment trials or review posture and seating if required.
Physiotherapy for Older Adults
Physiotherapists play a vital role in the care of older adults, offering specialised services to enhance their overall health and well-being.
With a focus on mobility, strength, and balance, our experienced physiotherapists create personalised exercise programmes to improve independence, prevent falls, and manage chronic conditions.
Their expertise contributes to promoting active living and improving the quality of life for older adults.
Aquatic Physiotherapy
Aquatic Physiotherapy/Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy that is designed for and based in water. It uses the properties of water such as buoyancy and resistance to allow for a unique and personalised treatment approach. The warmth of the water eases pain and allows your muscles to relax, both of which help you to exercise more easily.
Our physiotherapists have completed post-graduate training in aquatic physiotherapy.
The purpose-built pool has spacious changing and shower facilities as well as hoists for pool access if required.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialised form of therapy primarily aimed at reducing symptoms of vertigo, dizziness, visual disturbance and/or imbalance.
Following thorough assessment, treatment programmes are devised based on the presenting symptoms, medical history, diagnostic test results and physical examination.
Our skilled therapists are trained to perform the Epley Manoeuvre and other positional techniques if indicated. They have completed competency-based post graduate training in vestibular rehabilitation and will use their skills to enable you to regain confidence in your balance and mobility.
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
FES can help people who have had damage to their brain or spinal cord to move more easily. It uses small electrical impulses to stimulate weakened or paralysed muscles to produce movement. The most common problem treated by FES is foot-drop, an inability to lift the foot and toes whilst walking.
Our physiotherapists are the only clinicians within the Channel Islands who are qualified to assess and support provision and set-up of the Odstock Foot Drop Stimulator, a clinically proven FES system.
This treatment is typically only available through specialist centers in the UK, but we are proud to bring it directly to our island community, eliminating the need for off-island travel and long waiting lists.
Group Exercise
We recognise the importance of exercising in a group, it can increase motivation, increase your effort level and can make exercise more fun.
We run several groups for the Parkinson’s society and other charitable organisations, including a gym and aqua therapy class, as well as two Neuro Active Exercise classes.
In addition, we run Ai Chi classes, with a focus on relaxation, strengthening and balance. This aquatic technique is characterized by slow movement coordinated with deep breathing, based on elements of qigong and tai chi.
Good Boost Sessions
Good Boost is an innovative exercise and rehabilitation programme designed to help people with long-term health conditions move more, have fun, and feel better.
It involves tablet computers and artificial intelligence to provide a personalised workout to help improve your mobility, balance and fitness.
Postural Management
Postural management is a 24-hour therapeutic approach that involves assessing and supporting a person’s body position in lying, sitting, and standing to prevent complications and promote comfort, function, and participation in daily life.
For some, advice on correct postural management may involve sourcing the correct chair for use in the daytime, for others with more complex needs, it may require a full review of their 24-hour support.
Our collaborative approach ensures that we find the most suitable solution for each client based on their clinical needs, environmental considerations and goals.
Wheelchair and Seating Assessments
From comfortable, supportive armchairs, to more sophisticated wheelchairs for those with complex needs, our team can help you to maximise both comfort and mobility.
A detailed assessment will identify your seating needs, whilst taking into consideration your goals, any co-existing health conditions and relevant environmental factors. The overall aim being to provide you with the most appropriate system to improve your posture, mobility and independence.
Manual Handling Assessments
A moving & handling assessment considers the needs of both individuals and their carers.
Our experienced clinicians undertake thorough, detailed assessments to obtain a clear understanding of existing manual handling requirements and future considerations in order to provide detailed recommendations, risk assessments and a moving and handling plan.
Recommendations may include the trial of new equipment or the provision of additional training.
Home Environment Assessments and Adaptations
Our homes are the place we should feel most relaxed, safe and confident. When this is compromised following an injury or illness, our experienced occupational therapists will use their skills and training to suggest tailored environmental modifications to support our clients to continue to live safely and independently at home.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Equipment Provision
Occupational therapists are experts in the assessment and provision of equipment to support personal care, mobility, and daily routines (e.g., bathing aids, adapted kitchen equipment and dressing aids).
Our team can visit your home and provide recommendations about equipment and the set-up of activities within the home environment to optimise your independence.
Ergonomic and Workplace Assessments
Following a customised onsite assessment, recommendations are made to optimise accessibility and independence, ensuring that our client’s conditions are managed effectively in the workplace.
Care Home Functional and Environmental Assessments
Our team have extensive experience of working in care homes and we provide support for care home residents to enhance their independence, safety, and quality of life within their care environment.
